Software “minds” developed to track down information have been worked on to aid consumers in targeting deals, acquiring research clues, etc. However, these “agents” haven’t been too successful, at least until now.
The key, apparently, is to let agents develop their own language. On a checkerboard like map, agents are meant to surround “prey” in order to win. In this simple predator-prey scenario, communication between the agents about their states is necessary.
The implementation of this particular experiment involved a message board on which the predators would post, and by reading these posts, the agents would develop a language so they could effectively communicate their state. The project was so successful that the researchers couldn’t decipher the entire language by the end of the trial. Way too cool.
