Human see, human do.
In a discovery that will no doubt be of serious interest to many (the mendax.org staff in particular…), a McGill University professor is undertaking a study in which a group of primates are being given the choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to examine the effects. It seems that the monkeys, when drinking alcohol tend to behave much as humans do, with similar differences in their drinking habits.
The study is taking place on St. Kitts island in the Carribbean, due to the fact that the green vervet monkeys on the island have become accustomed to the alcohol contained in fermenting sugar cane found on the island. The vervets living in the wild are on the ball – they enjoy drinking enough that they’re known to raid unattended drinks on beach bars of the island. Despite the findings so far however, there are no conclusions yet on whether or not alcohol helps the monkeys score at parties or become better dancers.
As usual, animal rights groups have jumped all over the experiment. Why is beyond me however – if someone wanted to take me to a tropical island and do nothing but feed me drinks over and over, I’d have no problem with that.
