Presidential debate commission apologizes to Nader, settles.
According to Ralph Nader’s lawyer, Howard Friedman, “the Massachusetts civil rights law does not allow a corporation through police power to use threats, intimidation, or force to violate the First Amendment rights of people because they disagree with the Commission.” Despite a fully transferable ticket and an invitation to be interviewed on site by Fox News, Nader was barred from the UMass campus, site of first presidential “debate”, by the debate comission and Massachussets State Police. The law appears to be on Nader’s side; he is the recipient of a letter of apology and a monetary settlement. The Comission on Presidential Debates is a Democrat and Republican organization formed by the major parties to hold debates in reaction to the more evenhanded, nonpartisan debates formerly run by the League of Women Voters.
