I stumbled across an interesting article entitled The Internet Power Grab about how commercialized the Internet is becoming. As this news title suggests, however, the article could be better titled, IMO.
In short, the Internet was created to send information across huge geographic distances, and to create a network that would last even if certain key nodes were taken out. When embraced by the public, the Internet began to serve up tons of material for the average person, be it sports coverage, music, or just news. Now, however, the Internet is starting to head in a different direction, as services that were once free are moving towards a pay-to-use platform.
The scary thing isn’t the adaptation of the Internet as a money-making enterprise, but rather that the public isn’t doing much to keep the Internet from becoming useful to only those who can afford it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the scariest part of all.
Consider this your public service announcement for the week.
