Bombing the moon.

They say that water may be present on the moon’s poles, but they’re not 100% sure. To be sure, however, a number of research groups have gotten together and devised a way to find out once and for all: bunker-buster missiles. Using technology found in wall-penetrating missiles, specially-designed probes will be outfitted with scientific equipment instead of explosives. The idea is to launch these probes at targets on the moon, where they’ll dig into the moon’s surface and begin processing information.

Already field-tested in New Mexico’s deserts, the missiles are capable of functioning after high-speed impacts. Hopefully, this will give us a better idea of what treasures the moon will hold, since who knows what could be trapped in moon water.

The mission is slated for 2007, after it gets approval from NASA. By then, though, we may not have to wait for a NASA sponsored mission, considering the way things are going. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if private ventures will begin considering if it’s a good idea to bomb the moon in NASA’s stead.
