Proprietary technology be damned!

by WyldKard on January 6, 2006

It’s bad enough when proprietary technology ends up making your life worse, like a broken foot that just won’t heal, ‘causing you to stumble around like some kind of idiot. It’s much worse, however, when you realize that the proprietary technology is yours, because then it’s like hobbling around with a foot you decide to replace with some sort of mechanical half-foot.

The old mendax.org site, prior to running on fancy-pants WordPress, was built on a database that I, as Computer Scientist extra-ordinaire, built with raw tools, blood, and sweat. Alas, WordPress is the the work of a thousand souls, while the old mendax.org database was but the work of me and me alone.

For obvious reasons, the mendax.org database of old doesn’t simply plug in to WordPress, as it would require some sort of custom solution that I do not have the time or inkling to do. I am sure I could come up with, given enough free-time, a snazzy SQL script that would do for the site what the Germans did for France. That is to say, it would annex it and make it better.

Alas, I think I will take the easy approach, and from time to time, manually add old entries to the site, by changing timestamps. I am a h4xor.

As you can see, the site is going back in time, as I’ve already thrown a bunch of older news bits into the archive. We’ll see how far back the database goes, but sadly, it won’t go back all the way, unlike Sandra Shine who’s bene hot.
