To the Pain or to the Death?

There has been a lot of discussion recently regarding the death penalty. Many feel that former gangster Stanley “Tookie” Williams should not have been put to death, because he had reformed himself. Recently, Clarence Ray Allen says he should not be put to death because he’s too old. Forgive me if I don’t shed a tear for either of these men. And what about that woman who drowned her children who has been getting press time recently? We should let her off because she claims she was insane? I don’t think so.

I’m not one to throw the death penalty around lightly, but come on people! Williams slaughtered people and helped to create one of the most lethal gangs in history. He supposedly finds God, writes a couple of children’s books, and we’re supposed to get all mushy inside and say, “Okay, Mr. Williams! You can go. We’re sorry. You’re obviously one of the good guys.” Uhm… NO!

And this loser Allen! He’s too old to be executed??!?!? Frankly, if I were confined to a wheel chair, blind, practically deaf, and had recently had a stroke, I’d be plunging that needle into my arm myself! “I’m too old.” BULLSHIT! He arranged for the murder of three people while he was already in jail for murder. I don’t care if he’s old and crippled. Those people he killed won’t ever get the chance to bitch about being old and crippled. He should have thought of the consequences before he unabashedly had them executed.

As for that woman who drowned her kids (whose name escapes me at the moment), they want to put her away for life in a mental institution. Do you think she’s ever going to be better? SHE KILLED HER CHILDREN! I don’t really think that’s something you come back from.

These people didn’t just accidentally kill someone in a car crash or something. They purposely took the life of someone. These people were tried, convicted, and sentenced. The problem is in our system. The death penalty is almost a joke due to the amount of appeals people are allowed to apply for. There should be a limit. You get two appeals and if that doesn’t work out, you’re gone within one year of your sentence date. None of this sitting on death row for 20 years crap.

I know… “But what about those few people who actually turn out to be innocent? If even one innocent person is put to death, doesn’t that make it wrong to continue with the barbaric practice of the death penalty?” *yawn* With the enormous technological advances in forensic science, iron-clad cases are being constructed. I’m not saying that we should put someone to death because we’re pretty sure they did it. I’m saying that if conclusive DNA evidence, witness testimony, and the myriad other things that make up the evidence of a trial CLEARLY and WITHOUT DOUBT point to that person being guilty of a heinous crime, then that person should be put to death. There are some people who just don’t belong in this world. Something is inherently wrong with them. How else could do they what they’ve done? I mean how many people are truly going to cry when they finally put Scott Peterson to death? He knowingly murdered his wife and unborn child. He doesn’t deserve to be walking through meadows picking flowers later in life. And what about the recent death of East Palo Alto Police Officer Richard May? I was disgusted last night when I watching the news. The mother of the person who shot him claimed it couldn’t have been her son’s fault. It was the fault of the probation system, because they didn’t place him with his mother who lives two hours from Palo Alto. Are you kidding me? That’s like saying it’s the officer’s fault for responding to the call or for showing up for work that day. No one forced that man to shoot Officer May. That man made a knowing and conscious choice. And did you catch the part about being on probation?!?! He’s already been convicted of multiple other charges. Do you think this man should be continued to occupy our streets?

There are consequences for murder. Everyone knows that. If one is going to make the choice to commit murder, then one must know there is the chance that he/she could be put to death. To claim that it is cruel and unusual is asinine. What got them on death row was cruel and unusual. Stand up and face the consequences of your actions!
