The Gracie dynasty is one of legend, perhaps one of the greatest fighting legends of the last century. From its beginnings as a new fighting style addressing superiority cross styles, to it being touted as a mandatory education for all no-holds-barred (NHB) fighting tournaments, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has risen from obscurity to the mainstream, even seeing references on the pilot episode of Heather Graham’s new sitcom.
Now, I receive word that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will feature a fight in May between Matt Hughes, whose hard-hitting tactics has earned him the title of welterweight champion, and Royce Gracie, who brought BJJ to the mixed martial arts (MMA) arena during the launching period of the UFC.
How Gracie will fare against Hughes is interesting not only because Gracie has spent the last several years fighting in Pride tournaments, a competing circuit to the UFC, but also because he, despite refining his style since leaving the UFC, will fight Hughes, who has adapted his own style specifically for UFC fights. Also, the age difference between the 39 year old Gracie and the seven-year-younger Hughes could make for a defining fight, proving to the world again that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the “true” form of BJJ, is supreme against all other fighting styles.
