At the Download Festival last weekend, among the druggies and hippies and fanboys, I saw an assortment of new Volkswagens for some sort of promo. It turns out that Volkswagen has a limited-time deal where they’re packaging new 2007 models with custom guitars, as Jalopnik now reports.
I make no claims that the custom guitar is a good guitar, or even that you’d look cool using it. Only that pre-installed guitar jacks in one’s ride is a pretty cool idea, even if it’s aimed at a niche market. For those who are on the road a lot, using a car’s stereo as an amp is a pretty innovative idea, and it opens the playing field for on-the-go podcasting or audio-blogging. Considering Volkswagen’s market in days gone by, moves like this may very well help maintain their youth-friendly image. Heck, if I were a real musician, I’d think this promo is the tits, even if I never did use their VW-branded, second-rate guitar.

These ads are on the tee-vee now. Sadly, the commercials fail to project the true awesomeness of guitar-hookups-in-vehicles. Why is no one pioneering moblogging-podcasts as I heralded?
