It is not difficult to draw parallels between the staple of American boyhood, the Boy Scouts, and the staple of Third Reich youth indoctrination, the Hitler Jugend. Let us not confuse the similarities as suggesting that the two organizations are equivalent , but let us see them for what they are: fraternities for the underage. These fraternities may not both be political on the surface, but they have clear religious undertones that smack of political propaganda, such as the furtherance of the anti-homosexual right-wing agenda.

The eerie similarities do not end with the obvious, however, for while one organization grooms is members for potential recruitment into the Skull and Bones of the collegiate world, the other recruits into an organization with similarly morbid motifs, only with guns. And lest one think that the Boy Scouts are not Orwellian watchdogs like the children of some Grammaton Clerics, think again.

Now Scouts earn a badge for turning in copyright violators. Perhaps this new cloth badge of honour has not yet received national support, but its local acceptance sends shivers up the spines of those who watch the slippery slope the Scouts are on. In a world where file-sharing is commonplace even before one reaches the liberal halls of colleges across the country, the inquisitors of the RIAA must be smiling knowing that they have agents that work for free, reporting their friends and family just to maintain a higher profit margin for the already rich, like some sort of corporate Stasi. This is not the American apple pie Eagle Scouts that make us proud, but rather something sick. Do we really want our children’s actions influenced so heavily by corporate greed?
