Vampires in space?

I’d be lying if I said I never liked White Wolf, but let’s be honest: they milk their cash cows to the point of player exhaustion. How many versions of the same game need to be released before the revisions are nothing more than a paycheck, and fail to add to the game’s experience? (Well, four, apparently.)

White Wold’s fall from my graces is nothing short of Star Wars losing my interest thanks to retarded decisions made by George Lucas. The difference is that I was more vested in White Wolf’s World of Darkness (WoD) than I was in Star Wars. In the case of both fictional worlds, however, there were only so many developer-driven changes I could take. Still, I have a soft spot for WoD and it’s respective campaign.

In what appears an unrelated note, some may recall my brief foray into the world of EVE Online. In a curious chain of events, EVE developer CCP Games and White Wolf have now merged, begging the question of why.

The benefits to the world of EVE are obvious - the game will enter the offline arena in both paper/pencil RPG form as well as via collectible card game. Yet, what does White Wolf’s intellectual property have to gain here? Perhaps Exalted will see an online variant, but what of the WoD, the original and primary cash cow? White Wolf has already diversified its properties by licensing worlds for publication, so why not do that and forget about merging with an MMORPG developer? Is there something obvious I’m missing, or is White Wolf simply further diversifying, heralding an expected end to tabletop RPGs?
