Famed developer Richard “Lord British” Garriott is now involved in Tabula Rasa, a new Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMMORPG) that is as much First Person Shooter (FPS) as it is an RPG. The game, based on a science-fiction universe unlike Garriott’s previous MMORPG, Ultima Online, is also unique in that it won’t feature classes from the get-go. Rather, the game will have all players begin on a fairly even level, and allow them to specialize their abilities as time goes on. Both this, and the merging of genres, were key points in my article on MMMORPG evolution which I published online years ago. Looking back, it’s nice to see that I was right about a few things. It will be just as interesting to note how well Tabula Rasa is adopted by the community, and if its changes to the MMORPG genre will receive proper recognition when the game is released. In any case, Tabula Rasa is one of the more unique titles that will go gold in the next year or so.
