Microsoft overlooking the trade-in crowd.

Sony is trying everything they can to lure people into buying the PS3, and at this point, they pretty much need to, since Sony keep screwing up in other fronts. Take, for example, the recent decision by Sony not to support pornography on Blu-Ray, which may sound good to parents, but will do little else than push the whole video industry towards HD-DVD, and make the PS3’s technology look ridiculous in comparison.

At least at EBGames and Gamestop, one can bring in an old PS2 and get a $100 credit towards the PS3. This is a pretty good move for Sony, since this trade-in is higher than the PS2 would normally go for. Sadly, Microsoft doesn’t have a similar offering, which is too bad. Perhaps Microsoft thinks that the 360 will be adopted by gamers regardless, but I can’t see them making less money by competing with Sony on every front imagineable.

In my case, I’m not a potential 360 buyer right now; I own the Wii, and my old XBox is sitting nearby in case I’m inclined to boot up an old GTA game or something. Right now, the price of the 360 and PS3 are too high for me, and the trade-in value of my XBox is too low to justify giving it up. However, if I could get $100 for my old unit, I would be a potential 360 buyer, and even if this means Microsoft would lose more money on the hardware, they’d easily make it up in the games I’d buy for the system. As it stands, however, I probably won’t consider buying a 360 until IPTV is a reality for me. I doubt I’m the only gamer in this scenario, and it’s a shame Microsoft doesn’t see this, as giving a solid $100 credit for an XBox trade-in would be a win-win situation for everyone but Sony. Isn’t that the whole point?
