While cruising through the headlines on cnn.com, I ran across an article about the May Day protests. Normally, I would just pass it by, because I think protests by illegal immigrants are ridiculous. They’re here illegally, so why should they have the right to protest our laws? They certainly aren’t abiding by them anyway. I guess I thought I would read the article and then have something to rant about. I expected to read some awful article pleading the case of these people who abuse our system. Instead, I was delightfully surprised.
The author of the article, Lou Dobbs, cried out against illegal immigrants, pointing out the irony of them protesting on a day that is still, at least on the books, called Law Day. A day to reflect on how we can better abide by the laws.
Lou Dobbs, I applaud you. I applaud your willingness to stand up and say what most of us want to say, but don’t for fear of dirty Berkeley hippy backlash. Not that we fear the hippies per se, but we don’t want to have to listen to their constant complaining about the rights of illegal immigrants. Well, what about the rights of thousands of immigrants trying to enter the country the way our laws are set to allow? What about my friend who spent 12 years trying to get into the country before she and her family were finally approved?
Lou Dobbs? Today I know your name. Well done.
