Now I listen to AM radio.
More accurately, I will soon listen to AM radio, thanks to a rather obnoxious move by CBS to shut down the all-talk 106.9 FM radio station in San Francisco and replace it with crappy oldies, which are not crappy because they are oldies, but because 106.9 appears to seek out oldies that are crappy, and put them in a horrible song rotation.
In the past, I would have gawked at an all-talk radio station, because talk radio has the ability to bore a person to the point of near-death, but 106.9’s FreeFM programming had gems in its lineup, such as the only good morning talk show, the Adam Carolla Show. In some way, it was comforting to know that if I got bored of the same old songs that stations tend to play, I could always find some quasi-intellectual quasi-amusing conversation to listen to. No longer.
Well, at least no longer on FM radio. When I woke up on Monday morning, I found my radio alarm sans-Carolla, and crappy oldies (refer to the above) was hardly a keen replacement. A little searching on the IntarWebs revealed to me, however, that legacy AM radio has taken up the slack, and I can now find the Carolla Show at 1550AM.
So CBS decided to pull the old 106.9 programming due to poor ratings, and they apparently expect crappy oldies to bring those ratings up? I’m not surprised that an all-talk radio station would do poorly ratings-wise, because only a couple shows on 106.9 proved themselves worthwhile. Nonetheless, I’d rather find a few gems than endure the pure dirt 106.9 is now playing.
CBS, thanks for annoying me again. Whenever I get my DeLorean back from the shop (if ever), I’ll be tuning into AM radio like we did in the old days. I may even get me one of them fancy 8-tracks.
