Learn to DPS, please.

I’m not sure why the title of his blog is not consistent with his subdomain, but pelides runs a blog I recently added to my daily WoW-circuit, and today threw up a repost about problems tanks have with their DPS posse.

The list is complete with standard complaints tanks have, or should have, with allies who stun or bubble unecessarily, run away from the tank when they pull aggro, and all the other little annoyances that DPS classes tend to fall prey to.

Not only should something like this be required reading for anyone who plays a DPS class, but these recurring faults are all the more reason that DPS classes should get a course in playing their role in a group, because most DPS classes tend to enjoy their perception of not having responsibilities that tanks and healers do, when the fact remains that this perception is wrong; DPS classes are not played the same way in a group as they are when played solo.

Once again, group dynamics should be taught in-game via instanced quests that begin at class trainers. The other members of the group should be computer-controlled, and the holy group trinity should be just that: a trinity. This way, characters would learn to play their group role effectively, particularly if the margin of error were small. For example, let a foolhardy bubble early on in the fight spell doom on the tank’s ability to hold aggro, or wipe because you’re the only DPSer and ran away from the tank after pulling aggro.

Blizzard has done a decent job of dumping new abilities on characters steadily, such that we have time to adapt to their particular uses. However, there’s still no inherent method for teaching players how to change their playstyle for group play without relying on out-of-game elements like experienced players or rather poor trial-and-error.

  1. Well, the reason I changed the name of my blog was because I registered the subdomain name without having had coffee the morning I set it up. In my guild I’m always joking about my delusion of being a tank.

When I set up the blogger account, I was thinking about just writing about all the sorts of crazy stuff I do when I got bored, but then grew into the idea of kinda taking up where BRK leaves off. Once you’ve graduated from the fantastic Hunter 101 stuff he teaches, there is a whole lot more you can do than just “provide massive quantities of sustained ranged dps”.

Ways to make farming at least somewhat interesting and less of a grind and keep your hunter skills sharp. 10 lvl 67 mobs at once with just me and my pet? Sure! It’s fun!

Once you’ve learned the rules, you can break them. I learned the rules so I could be a good raid member, but when I’m out in the wild… all bets are off.

  2. Well, it’s nice to have you contributing to the blogosphere. :)
