No Lich King anytime soon.

Over at MMOG Nation, Michael claimed that Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) could see the light of day by summer, and even though he later acknowledged that this tentative date was indeed likely early, I’m still going to take this time to proclaim that estimates of a WotLK release by end-of-summer are dead wrong. Just look at the information available to fans when Burning Crusade was announced: one faction’s new race was revealed about a year before the expansion’s release, and it wasn’t until the summer before the release that both factions’ new races were in a playable state for those lucky enough for a sneak preview. In other words, aside from some screenshots, we’ve seen very little of what development has been put into WotLK, and per most Blizzard interviews on the subject, we’re constantly bombarded with uncertainty as to how aspects of Inscription and Death Knights will play out. In short: WotLK is far from done.

In fact, based on the information available to us, I’d say that Death Knights aren’t even formalized yet. While the level designers and other artists are undoubtedly underway with their respective contributions to WotLK, I seriously doubt that we have even a close estimate about talent tree revisions, updated class mechanics, et al.

If I’m right, I expect to see a release no sooner than autumn, with a more likely release date scheduled just before the holidays.
